How to construct the list of 5 academic honors and the list of 10 activities in Common App

Many seniors are applying to colleges right now. They need to fill out the list of 5 academic honors and the list of 10 activities In Common App. Here are the things you need to know:

First, each of the 5 academic honor slots allows only 100 characters, not words. So please fill directly inside Common App to make adjustments so as to be realistic. Do not include any non-academic awards here. Debate awards are academic; dancing awards are not, for instance.

Second, each of the 10 activity slots allows only 150 characters, not words. So please fill directly inside Common App to make adjustments so as to be realistic.

Third, For the activity list, based on your own judgment, go from the most important to the least important. Likewise, for the award list, go from the most important to the less important. Sometimes, a student wins multiple awards from the same competition but at different levels, try to combine them all into one award slot.

Fourth, if you have won National Merit Semifinalist, you should consider putting it somewhere in the 5 awards if not all your other awards are above its significance. If you have won the National AP Scholar award, you probably should consider including it in the 5 academic honors if not all your other awards are above its significance. On the other hand, if you have many super strong/prestigious academic awards (not necessarily on the national level), feel free NOT to include either of these two awards. After all, thousands of students have them.

Finally, some high schools have something called class awards/department awards/book awards. Usually, only one student in his/her class gets the only chemistry award, for instance, from the chemistry department. Some students can get several of such awards once or over over time. Such awards are valuable and usually should be included in the honors list, if you feel they carry enough weight in comparison to other honors of yours.
