Esophageal Cancer Program

Esophageal cancer is a rare but serious cancer that falls into two categories, adenocarcinoma esophageal cancer and squamous cell esophageal cancer. Approximately 17,000 patients will develop esophageal cancer this year with 15,000 deaths. Because it is such a serious disease, it is important for newly diagnosed patients and those who may want a second opinion to find a medical center with therapies that are based on proven research and doctors experienced at treating esophageal cancer at every stage, from diagnosis through post-treatment therapies and palliative care. 

At Johns Hopkins, we treat more esophageal cancer patients than any other local medical center. Herman, MD, and Malcolm Brock, MD. We currently have a clinical trial open that promises to revolutionize the treatment of esophageal cancer.
• Our surgeons perform between 60 and 100 surgeries to treat esophageal cancer each year. Research shows that having surgery for esophageal cancer done at a center that does a high volume of that type of surgeries yields better results. We are one of the only centers in the area performing minimally invasive esophagectomies.
