Esophageal Cancer Program

Esophageal cancer is a rare but serious cancer that falls into two categories, adenocarcinoma esophageal cancer and squamous cell esophageal cancer. Approximately 17,000 patients will develop esophageal cancer this year with 15,000 deaths. Because it is such a serious disease, it is important for newly diagnosed patients and those who may want a second opinion to find a medical center with therapies that are based on proven research and doctors experienced at treating esophageal cancer at every stage, from diagnosis through post-treatment therapies and palliative care.

At Johns Hopkins, we treat more esophageal cancer patients than any other local medical center. Our researchers are covering new ground in the treatment of all types of cancer, including esophageal cancer. The staff at Johns Hopkins are experts, in many cases nationally and internationally known, in esophageal cancer and how to treat it.

Reasons to come to Johns Hopkins

There are many reasons why so many patients with esophageal cancer come to Hopkins for cancer treatment. These are a few of them:

  • Our gastroenterologists specialize in diagnosing and staging esophageal cancers using proven techniques for accurate diagnosis, such as endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and confocal endoscopic microscopy.
  • Our multi-disciplinary clinic provides patients and their families with access to all of our esophageal cancer experts, oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, and gastroenterologists , to develop the best treatment plan in one day.
  • Our care and treatment is based on research done right here at Johns Hopkins. We see what patients struggle with and that information goes straight to research to be translated into more effective care and advanced practice for chemotherapysurgery, and radiation.
  • Johns Hopkins is the first and only cancer center to pioneer the use of new biomarkers to personalize therapy in esophageal cancer through work being done by James G. Herman, MD, and Malcolm Brock, MD. We currently have a clinical trial open that promises to revolutionize the treatment of esophageal cancer.
  • Our surgeons perform between 60 and 100 surgeries to treat esophageal cancer each year. Research shows that having surgery for esophageal cancer done at a center that does a high volume of that type of surgeries yields better results. We are one of the only centers in the area performing minimally invasive esophagectomies.
