Every month your employer puts $ in your retirement account. This $ will not be yours until you work X years for your employer. After that, the $ won't be taken away from you when you leave your company - they say the $ is vested in your account. In another words, you have to work x years for your employer in order to actually get the portion your employer contributed to your retirement account. Otherwise, you will lose the portion from your employer if you didn't work x years for that employer. This is what they call not vested, meaning the $ may get taken away from you.
