老中最缺的是network

我们这一代老中吃苦都不是问题，好面子在面对困境时大都能放下，但network可以说是一个巨大的硬伤。但network在找工作上是一个非常重要的因子。

和这里的大多数人比起来，俺这博士后工作是最不稳定的。来美快20年，也换过几回。虽然每次都有惊无险，压力还是有体会的。之所以有惊无险，每次都有人帮忙，也因此对network有比较深刻的认识。

我的每个工作都是有人介绍的。来美国也好，还是在美国再找工作，都直接或间接与朋友的帮忙有关。大学里找博士后位置，往往是老板一个人决定的，所以，有个人介绍一下，基本就搞定了。但工业界其实也一样靠network。俺在新州和麻州的两大制药公司的面试都是朋友帮忙介绍的。新州的那家面试完后，内部消息说两个位置都会给我offer。但运气不好，刚面试完公司就冻结了所有的hiring。不然那次要拿到offer，怎么也去了。几个月后在麻州面试，offer来了，但本地的一个offer也同时来了，权衡一下才决定留下来。没有内部朋友的帮助，我连面试的机会也没有。太太的第一个正式工作也是朋友的朋友请我们去party。在聚会上碰到了未来的老板，而太太的背景正好match。

要建立network不难，就是不能急功近利。多参加一些华人的团体，多一些volunteer，扩大自己的交往圈子很重要。认识的人越多，信息也越多。什么时候自己有需要，自然是有用的。这种交往的作用在短期很难看出来。只有自己有需要时才发现交往圈子大的好处。所以，急功近利的心态是肯定不行的。

建立network的另一个方式就是帮助他人，尤其是雪里送炭式的方式。这种方式是让朋友真正认识你的为人，在你需要帮助时，你帮助过的人往往是尽力回报你。另外，不要以为雪里送炭只帮了一个人，往往这种事情会让许多人真正认识你，让你的network变得越来越大。

“出门靠朋友”，大家别忘了在朋友需要帮助的时候伸出你的手。
