Everyone thinks that he/she can beat the market.  Reality is no.  There is maybe less than 1% of professional managers who can beat the market sometimes.  The best way for people like us who are not professionals is to put the retirement investment in index funds.  There are S&P500 or total stock market index funds.  S&P500 has 500 stocks and total stock market index has 2000 to 3000 stocks.  The risk for total stock market index is lower than S&P500, plus total stock market index has all spectrum of stocks in there, large, mid and small caps.
