Renew on the last day of Lease

Lease will expire 5/31.  Tenants cannot decide whether to renew or extend for 2 months until the last day before lease expires.  Tenants said they are waiting for one job transfer decision, which won't be known until the last day of the month.  I am guessing they are buying a house, waiting for that decision. Does anyone know what is the magic about this last day of the month, one day before lease expires?  I tried to figure out why tenants cannot make decision on 5/30, but it has to be 5/31?
