Spectacular Mixed Media Series Combines Photography and Watercolor
Trust innovation to consistently emanate from the youth. With herself as the subject, colorful paint, and an extremely fertile imagination, artist Aliza Razell immerses herself into a virtual abstract reality by converging the two mediums of watercolor and photos with the powers of Photoshop. The initial series, Anesidora, is all about the tale of Pandora’s Jar, the original source of the proverbial ‘Pandora’s box’ a detail misconstrued from the 1400s.
Pandora in Greek mythology is “the first woman, bestowed upon humankind as a punishment for Prometheus’s theft of fire. Entrusted with a box containing all the ills that could plague people, she opened it out of curiosity and thereby released all the evils of human life.” The next series is derived from the Finnish word ikävä, or the vague feeling of missing something or someone. As part of a yearlong photo-a-day project, Razell has created these collections.
At 19 years old, she masterfully creates lovely narratives in her fusion style media. She either uses very dull and muted colors or black and white in the photo elements of her images, set against extremely bright, vivid splashes of watercolors. Doing this creates a tremendously dramatic effect as the sedate looking organic world clashes with wild, make-believe paint.
In the ikävä series, Razell seems to be interacting with her own spiritual energies as the watercolor shapes seem to be images of herself either mirrored or as shadows left behind. One image has her cradling vibrant orange colors as they fall off her palms. In another mixed media photo she holds hands with a faceless, purple hand entity whose torso fades into a shade of blue.
Anesidora is decidedly more epic-like, where a winged Razell takes flight via yellow orange wings lifting her off the ground. She also shields herself from harm when a seemingly hostile surge of violet spurts forth from the ground, assaulting Razell like a giant squid. These are just a few of the images conjured up by the innovative Razell in her project.
