Santa Claus is the short, fat, and jolly old man who gives gifts to children at Christmas.  He has a long beard and always wears a red suit with white fur.

Santa Claus was originated from the Dutch who settled in New York a long time ago.   The Dutch believed that Saint Nicholas gave gifts to children.  They honored him every year on Dec. 6.  Americans who lived nearby enjoyed this tradition and brought it to their celebration of Christmas.  However, the Dutch speak "Saint Nicholas" very fast, and it sounded like "Sinterklaas".  So when the English said it, it sounded like "Santa Claus".
