A famous Zürcher [1]

Max Frisch [2] (1911-1991)

Max Frisch was born in Zürich on May 15, 1911, the son of an architect. In 1930 he began his study of German [3] in the university of Zürich. However, after his father’s death, he had to give up his study due to financial situations and instead worked as a freelance writer for the New Zürich Newspaper and other newspapers. He wrote his first novel in 1934, but soon after he burned all his manuscripts and decided to stop his writing. He began his architecture study in 1936 and graduated with an architect degree in 1941. But soon he wrote again. He wrote above all dramas which dealt with the war and the post-war periods. Like his contemporary Friedrich Dürrenmatt [4] Frisch criticized Swiss neutrality during the World War II. Although Frisch and Dürrenmatt had much in common (they were both opponents of the Swiss army, worked together at Zürich theater house) their relationship was only almost a friendship.
