You should return it, it's the right thing!

Doing the right thing is never easy, sometime it hurts, but it's the RIGHT thing. Since you know who the owner is, and feel guilty keeping it, not returning it likely will result in the following, 1. seriously damage the relationship with the owner (if you know her/him, maybe a neighbour?), 2. you'll continue to feel guilty, 3. when/if the owner finds out,she/he will ask for it back and may take legal action if you refuse.

You are obviously very attached to the dog now, maybe you can talk to the owner frankly, and ask to keep it, if he/she doesn't agree, graciously give it back, and move on.
