If you file a joint return, you may be able to claim your treaty exemption only
for the 9 months during 2004 according to the U.S. - China Income Tax treaty.
See chapter 9 of Publication 519, U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens, for information on
how to file your return. You are still entitled to the standard deduction of
$9,700 for married filing joint taxpayers as resident aliens even if you claim a
treaty exemption.
