different than B2 visa.  F2 is a type of dependent visa (on F1). B2 is not. When you apply for F2 status inside US, it is called an adjustment of status, which implies that your purpose of stay has changed.

When you apply for F2 visa in China, the original purpose you stated on your B2 visa application has changed. Don't know how the visa officer will note on your B2 visa if the F2 visa application is denied.

Visa is a permit to travel to and enter US.  Visa status is the legal status that someone holds while remaining in US.
