That's one of my considerations. We (as individual resident and with properties damaged) are the weaker side (弱者), in China, the weaker side is usually not protected (in practice, no matter whatever laws/policies exist); I just hope in US it's not that bad - I understand there are no such absolute fairness in this world.
In China, the stronger side (强势)can and tend to look down upon and abuse 弱者. My dad told me that yesterday when Haier guys declared the 50,000 Yuan, one of the guy said "你家房子着火好啊,越烧越旺“,其张狂和对弱者的肆无忌惮的蔑视和冷漠章显无遗。 这种冷血的动物多了,这个社会就退化到了某种弱肉强食的原始状态而不可救药。
