Taihiti cruise is an excellent choice - far better than staying on an island. In my opinion, only Bora Bora is worth staying for a few days, and only at the lagoon area. But, the lodging over there runs you $500 a night minimum and over $1000 for over water bungalow. Not to mention the costs of meals.
Cruising is the best way, especially to avoid Papeete.
Honestly speaking, most Polynesian islands are more or less the same - after you see a few Motu, you would get Motu fatique!
