first time cruiser.

Key is you need to go with NEWER ships, especially if it is your first cruise.

Caribbean cruises have East, West, and South Itineraries. East go to more sophifiscated islands, St.Thomas, St. Marten, sometimes San Juan also. West go to more watersport oriented islands, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, one island in Jamaica. South can go all the way near South America coast such as Curacao, St.Lucia, Martinique, Granada ...
You can find watersports and good beaches on ALL itineraries. Good shopping (for Americans and Europeans anyway) is on the East itinerary.

You can be as active as you want, and as relaxed as you want. Those who claim cruises are for retirees either they never cruise and just bs here, or they went to the wrong itinerary / wrong ship.

If you like activities, the Voyager Class ships of Royal Caribbean, such Navigator of the Sea, Explorer of the Sea, Mariner of the Sea, etc would be your top picks. If you like some activities but a bit more relaxed, then either Princess or Celebrity would be your choices. If you want European flavour, then Costa would satisfy you. Then Carnival is famous for its party atmosphere. Just dont pick Holland America which tend to cater older folks.

We have cruised 8 times, (did one in April/May and another one in Sept this year) and thinking about doing another between Thanksgiving and New Year. Cruise is by far the BEST VALUE FOR YOUR VACATION MONEY. PERIOD.

Also you do not need to get a balcony - we have done all, Balcony, Suite, Inside, Outside ... Other than gaining some space, there is not much difference among different types of cabins and EVERYONE ENJOYS THE SAME AMENITIES OFFERED IN THE PUBLIC AREAS. (Except Queen Mary II). We go strictly for prices and itineraries.

Rule of thumb, for an inside if you can get a price of about 75/day you get a good deal, outside 90/day, balcony varies greatly by itinerary 110-120/day is considered good deal for Caribbean.
If you go to Caribbean in Summer months, you would not be able to use your balcony as weather is very very hot. If you go to Alaska and it rains all the time, you wont get to use your balcony either. Our Alaska cruise on 09/03 to 09/10 rained the first 6 days from Alaska to Vancouver. I cannot see anyone be able to use their high priced balcony (100%+ more than what we paid for our inside cabin.)

Hope this help.
