Prices, and Other Charges
Far and away, the most popular HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) in the world in terms of sales is the Toyota Prius, one of the oldest and most reputable brands in the industry. And because there are now so many Prius Hybrids on the streets today, the need to service these vehicles grows with each new purchase. Along these same lines, because our dealer network here at The Hybrid Shop works with so many Prius vehicles, they are constantly being bombarded with a simple question: How much does it cost to replace a Toyota Prius Hybrid Battery?
As you might expect, there are many factors that will dictate a typical price range, a few of which are as follows:
1. The model year of your vehicle
2. The shipping expenses of the battery unit itself
3. Any labor expenses associated with battery replacement—an expense which varies significantly for auto service providers all over the globe
4. If there are any “Authorized Toyota Dealers” in your area…or not
Understanding Core Credits for the Toyota Prius
An important component of coming up with the total cost of a Prius battery replacement is the “core credit” program Toyota offers. Essentially, this means you will get a “credit” for allowing your battery to be recycled—which helps the environment but also means a big deduction on your replacement bill—usually somewhere around $1350 or so.
That being said, let’s take a look at model years for the Prius and what you might expect:
2001, 2002, and 2003 (1st Generation) Toyota Prius Battery Prices
As mentioned already, the following numbers will vary, but in most cases the 2001-2003 Prius models batteries have an MSRP of $3,699, with a $1350 deduction for the core credit, not including installation labor.
2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009(2nd Generation) Prius Battery Pricing
Like the 1st Generation, the 2nd Generation has an MSRP of$3,699, less the $1350 deduction for the core credit. This makes it sound like they are paying $5049 which isn’t the case. It needs to be worded differently or it appears misleading. This is also true for the wording on the 3rd Gen pack. The first Gen wording is better.
2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 (3rd Generation) Prius Battery Prices
The 3rd Generation has an MSRP of $3939, less the $1350 core credit when applicable.
Prius Battery Replacement Labor Rates
Toyota has set their replacement time for Prius batteries at roughly 1.6- 1.7 hours for their dealer base, but this is something you’ll want to confirm with the dealer before you sign any type of service agreement. Generally speaking, dealerships range anywhere from $100-$200 per hour in labor rates.
