how do you define win or lose? By each transaction?

if the game is not over, you really do not know whether you have won or lost. A successful VC typically fails 17 deals, break even on 2 deals, and win big on one deal. That big winner will cover all his losses and make him very profitable. The keys are to know what your business model is, know whether your model is statistically correct, and have the conviction and capitals to continue the game when you hit an anormaly.
