Investor Demographics

The majority (77 percent) of buyers are individuals, while less than half (48 percent) of sellers are individuals. The majority of sellers are comprised of limited liability corporations (34 percent), corporations (eight percent), limited liability partnerships (three percent), and other entities (six percent).

More than eight out of every 10 (81 percent) investors are male, while females only make up 19 percent. The average investor is 49 years old. Buyers are a little younger than sellers at an average age of 48, compared to 53 for sellers. Nearly half (47 percent are white), one-quarter are Asian, 13 percent are Hispanic, one percent are black, and six percent are of another ethnic background. Three-fourths of investors are married and 20 percent are single.

Most investors are highly educated, with 60 percent having earned a college or graduate degree. Investors are also well compensated; the median annual income / revenue is $175,000 and 86 percent of investors earn over $100,000 per year.
