Personally I recommend Hudson Hotel on W 52nd street.

almost close to everywhere. time swaure, Lincoln center, central park, Columbus circle,fifth avenue, all the famous tourist places in NYC ...

And it is not expensive at all.. about $300/night... the facility is a little outdated. but the feeling is good. I like the lounge called Library in the hotel, very nice place to hang out. You can find a lot of locals there, as well...
