Help! How to replace a garage door remote control?

The previous tenant moved out without giving back the garage door remote control. Can I just buy a new one from Amazon? cost about $15. Is there a comparibility issue? Do I need to check the model of the motor first? Is it difficult to program it?  Thanks for your help!
