If you are going this route - what about Nikkor 80-400mm VR?

You could get a used one on eBay for less than $1000.  It is relatively light and hand heldable.  The AF is slow but VR should help. 

Get a TC-14E II to go with your 70-200 F2.8 to make it a 280 mm F4.  Anything away, use the 80-400mm. 

BTW, have you seen these pictures I took at the zoo?
