Most likely, his providing a washer and a dryer will be viewed as a condition precendent, the failure of which will not result in a contract. There are other considerations, such as whether you let him know or he had reason to know that you were urgently looking for a property to lease. If neither of you did not think time was of the essence, then you should have given him a reasonable time to find a washer and a dryer. That is why I said in the first message that you should let him know on Thursday because you signed another lease. Now that the condition precedent is fulfilled, he could have thought he relied upon you promise to incur damage and you are responsible. His saying to get back to you on Sunday is not a promise because it is too indefinite. You may negotiate with him to reduce the damage. After all, he may need the washer and the dryer for the next tenant anyway.
