Nothing is free. You either pay insurance company, or you pay government through taxes and let politicians decide what kind of care you deserve.
In a dinner table conversation, I asked a Canadian professor how he liked the healthcare system. His response is enlightening: Canada's healthcare system works because of two reasons:
1. People have to wait in line to get treatment. Some people die during the wait and save the money for the system.
2. US is the backup. When people can't wait, they go south to get treatment.
It is a safe bet that you'll pay more in taxes in Canada than paying insurance in US.
