Was this house in forclosure? Did you check your title to see whether there was lien on the house? You did not provide enough information. You can go to your county recording office to get a report to see the details.

Generally speaking, it is common in California that a house has two mortgages. If the junior mortgage forcloses you may buy it at a discount price. However, you are liable for the senior mortgage.
