You probably right on the R12

It seems that Toyota still using R12 till 95 (last year for new car to use R12), whereas a lot of american cars switched to R134a in early 90s already.
The right way for R12 system service is the retrofit to 134a system (by changing fittings etc.) but it is not worth it for 16 years old car. Tools for R12 is rear nowadays and the owner may need to go to shop for services.
