Have tried a cheap 500mm F8, a 600mm Sigma mirror lens and a Tokina 400mm F/5.6. Both the cheapo 500mm and Sigma 600mm are F8 MF and I just could not get any sharp pictures out of them. The enlarged pictures from 70-300mm coudl easily surpass those from 500mm and 600mm in terms of IQ.
The Tokina 400 F5.6 is an AF and there are some very good review about it. However, it does not work with my D80. As a matter of fact, the sales guy at KEH told me many of those old lenses from third party do not work well with the newer DSLR. For example, the tokina will needed to be "rechip" to work with a particular D80. The updated lens will work with one unit of D80 and may not work with a different unit.
I have since located a 300mm Nikkor AF IF F4 in new condition. This is the version before current AF-S version. It is said to be almost as good as the 300mm F2.8 in term of optics. I am thinking about getting it with a 17E II to get me to 510mm and F6 or so.
What do you think? Any one has shot with a 300mm F/4?
