i have the nikon 50mm f1.8, it is affordable, fast and compact. it is too good to pass ..:-)
plus, with nikon dSLR, 50mm becomes 75mm due to the crop factor, so it is pretty good to shoot portrait.
one thing you will notice when you open up the apeture to 1.8, the depth is very shallow. what is wrong with 1.8? if a model has a big nose, and you focus on his eyes, then his nose is likely to be out of focus. In this case, you might need to change the apeture to f2.5 - f4.0. this is more likely when you do the group shoot.
overall, 50mm f1.8 is definitely a keeper ,,,,
