The following comment may explain why RMBS is up:
Per Rambus conference call, FTC ruling does NOT apply to royalties, fees already collected. Ruling applies going forward.
MOST IMPORTANT THE RULING DOES NOT APPLY TO DDR2 or 3 or anything after the first generation of DDR(1). Since SDRAM (predecessor to DDR) and DDR1 is just about obsolete, good news for Rambus. One analyst (AMTECH, I believe) says that Rambus is worth $53/share if FTC did NOT include DDR2 or future generations of DDR tech. in their "remedy."
Secondly, the FTC is not a court of law and they are NOT allowed to set royalty rates or caps. Their own ALJ (admin. law judge) issued a lengthy opinion in Rambus' favor. In prior similar appeals of FTc cases, the FTC lost and the plaintiff won. It's widely expected that Rambus will win on appeal also.
Thirdly, the release of price fixing documents in the Dept. of Justice case by Micron is required by March 4 (I may be off by a few days) as ordered by the ANTITRUST judge. IMO, MICRON WILL NOT ALLOW THESE DOCUMENTS TO BE RELEASED. THEY SETTLED WITH TESSERA IN A SIMILAR CASE RIGHT BEFORE THE TRIAL WAS TO BEGIN.
WATCH OUT SHORTIES, YOU COULD WAKE UP ONE MORNING AND FIND RAMBUS UP $10+/SHARE DUE TO A SETTLEMENT
