the 50mm f1.8 is around $100, expensive? no.

usually the fixed focus lense is better than the zoom lens (such as 18-70mm) optically. and it is also a good walk-around lens overall.

85mm f1.8/f1.4? i guess it gives you longer distance to the subject, as a result, there would be not or less distortion on the subject. and it must be better than 50mm f1.8 at other respect.

18-70mm is a good bargain lense for D70, but for indoor and potrait, i would stay with 50mm or other fixed focus len.
