Nikon RAW and PS question

i have a question ....
when shooting RAW with Nikon D70, how you guys edit in Photoshop?
because PS does not recognize RAW/NEF format, and it transfers RAW/NEF to
TIFF format.

is it normal?

wonder how do u guys do it?
