Can food affect your mood?
Food can affect our moods!
Some foods can stimulate our brains and make us happy while some can just do the opposite.
According to Chris Kilham, an ethnobotanist, chocolate or cocoa can raise brain serotonin, a mood-altering chemical. Coffee and tea, containing caffeine, can help our moods. Bananas, containing dopamine, and purple berries like blackberries and blueberries, containing anthocyanin, also lift moods. Seafood which is high in omega-3 fatty acids is beneficial to our mental health. Turmeric, a spice, containing curcumin, also enhances mood. Food which is rich in protein also boosts our moods because protein stabilizes blood sugar and sustains the energy level. The more energy we have, the better our mood, says Dr. Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN and Pediatric NP.
Sugar, gluten, and processed foods, on the other hand, can negatively affect our moods. According to Dr. Pick, over-consumption of sugar leads to fluctuations in blood sugar and causes mood swings. Gluten can affect the brain function and energy level in people with sensitivity to gluten. It can also affect the adrenal glands, responsible for releasing hormones in stress response. Trans fats in processed foods have been shown to cause irritability and aggression, says Kilham. If we have a truly nutritious, natural diet, we would see big mood improvements.
