• Pell Grant graduation rates: To calculate this, U.S. News started with an entering class of full-time, first-year, bachelor's degree-seeking students who were awarded Pell Grants, and calculated a graduation rate based on the count among that cohort who completed their degree program within six years. Because achieving results from a broader base is more challenging, this graduation rate was summed with the proportion of the entering class awarded Pell Grants, capped at 0.5.
• Pell Grant graduation rate performance: This assesses success at achieving equitable outcomes for students from underserved backgrounds. To start, schools' six-year graduation rates of Pell Grant students were divided by the six-year graduation rates of all other students from the full-time, first-year, bachelor's degree-seeking entering class. For most schools, this produced a quotient less than one, but the minority of schools whose Pell graduation rates are equal to or greater than non-Pell graduation rates all began with the highest initial score of 1. Additional credit was summed based on the proportion of the entering class that received Pell Grants. Schools whose entering cohorts were at least 50% Pell Grant students had their scores augmented by 0.5; schools below 50% Pell Grant students had their scores augmented by the proportion that received Pell Grants.
