National Merit Finalist --- 对college application 有帮助吗？

儿子进了 National Merit Finalist。我建议他update his college applications. 但是他不同意，说这没有那么重要， 没什么帮助。是这样吗？这是我家老大， 没有经验。提前谢谢大家！
