Compatible Number
Definition of Compatible Number
-
Compatible numbers are numbers that are close in value to the actual numbers and easy to add, subtract, multiply, or divide mentally.
-
They are useful in estimating the sum, difference, product, or quotient.
-
Estimate 13 ÷ 3.6.
To estimate the quotient, choose the compatible numbers 12 and 4 as 12 and 4 are compatible with each other. Also notice that 12 is closer to 13 and 4 is closer to 3.6.
This is my comment: Division like the example above might be obvious, but some of them are not. For example, 9.4 + 62.6, what are the compatible numbers? It could be 9 + 61 (because 9 + 1 = 10), it could be 9 + 62 (simply drop decimal) and it could be 10 + 62 (because 10 plus anything is easy) , pending on which way is "easy" to the individual and what reason that is "easy". Is there a standard answer to this question?
