Bank of America said Tuesday that it started reaching out to borrowers to have a portion of their mortgage principal forgiven under a settlement with the federal government over foreclosure practices.

BofA estimates average monthly savings of 30 percent on mortgage payments for those who qualify to have as much as $150,000 taken off their loan balances.
