Once is no rule

This proverb means that one occurrence of something is not enough to establish a pattern or precedent. Just because something happens once doesn’t mean it will happen again, or that it’s a reliable indicator of future events. It functions as a paradoxical or self-referential saying, similar to "the only rule is that there are no rules". It highlights the idea that a single instance of something does not establish a general principle or rule, meaning one deviation from a standard isn't enough to create a new norm. The phrase implies that rules can be broken or that established patterns don't always apply, suggesting a focus on context and flexibility over strict adherence to norms.

Taking the phrase literally creates a contradiction, as it establishes a "rule" about there being no rules. In everyday language, such statements are often understood as shortcuts for "there are no rules" .  It's used to convey that a single event or action is not enough to make something a general pattern or rule. The saying encourages a departure from rigid rules or expectations, suggesting that situations may require bending or breaking norms. It can be a way to question or reject established but unacknowledged rules or social customs.

Logically, the phrase is contradictory because it's self-referential, like other paradoxical statements, it highlights the nature of rules and exceptions, where one exception (the rule itself) complicates the idea of having no rules at all.
