说地道英语 - 这样的说法你会用吗?

 

1. Upset - /?p?set/  n. unexpected or unlikely defeat or victory of a game, contest, or election，比赛，选举， 爆冷门，意外胜利或失败

It would be quite an upset if the favourite didn't win.

 

如果这个夺标大热门没有获胜，那就真是一个大冷门。

** the favourite – n. 赛前被看好的一方，热门球队，

2. Signature –. characteristic, distinctive; closely associated with someone or something : making a person or thing easy to recognized; 招牌的, 特色的; 可以形容人，也可以形容事物，

 

• signature product - 特色产品

Signature dish -

Signature smile

Signature singing style

 

A surprise ending is the signature of an O. Henry short story.

• O. Henry 短篇小说的标志。

 

3. Highbrow – /?ha?.bra?/ adj.  （informal） highly cultured， intellectual, academic, and often difficult to understand.（书籍、戏剧等）严肃高雅的，阳春白雪的；

highbrow music, highbrow magazine, highbrow language, highbrow salon /s??lɑ?n/

那么这个词也可以形容 - (人)文化修养高的;

            Amy thinks opera is too highbrow to be enjoyed by regular people.

Amy认为歌剧太过阳春白雪，普通人无法欣赏。

 

4. shotgun  - n. 猎枪; 那它还有另外的意思，在美式英语当中，非正式的说法，

（US, informal）- front passenger seat；副驾驶座;

 

The kids took turns riding shotgun.

孩子们轮流坐在前排的座位上。

Ride shotgun – 坐副驾驶座位；
