Why do we use 常 as 常?

Why do we use 常 as 常? What is the connection of this character with English word? There is a partial but solid answer for it, found out today from lone exploration of decades long, under fairly difficult condition, not to say indulging in pleasure pursuing. May this "常 spirit" to live as long as the legend Chang'e, the Lady in the Moon, without any change :)
