As I understand, "Ms" can be used for single and married woman. "Mrs" confirms one's marital status, which is a little less preferred nowadays.
Here's what Wiktionary says:

  1. A title used before an adult female's name or surname instead of Miss or Mrs.

Mrs (plural Mmes)
Abbreviation

  1. A title used before an adult female's name or surname. Usually used with the married surname.
