中美合作所是二战中为打击日本而建立的组织，至今并无证据其与白公馆渣滓洞等监狱有关系。
中美特种技术合作所，又简称中美技术合作所、中美合作所、中美所等，最常见的称呼是中美合作所。它是第二次世界大战中中国和美国军事情报机构合作建立的战时跨国情报机构，其目的是中美之间加强军事情报的合作，共同打击日本。《中美特种技术合作协定草案》第一条为：
“为中美两国共同对日作战，组织中美特种技术合作所（简称中美所），交换日军海陆空军事情报和搜集中国大陆气象情报，训练游击队，挺进日军后方，协助美军在中国沿海登陆作战，共同迅速歼灭日寇。”
至今并无证据显示中美合作所和军统的白公馆、渣滓洞等监狱有组织上的关系。人们这方面的印象主要来源于小说《红岩》、电影《烈火中永生》、歌剧《江姐》等文艺作品的渲染。中美合作所的历史随着第二次世界大战的结束而结束，中美特种技术合作所从未参与过国共争端。不过，在白公馆和渣滓洞里对中共政治犯进行刑讯的一些军统人员，确实是由当初二战时期中美合作所为对日作战培养出来

1943年中美合作特训班开学典礼
中美合作所在中美两国共同对日作战中发挥出了重要作用。
1.在对日作战中破译日军密码。美国空军击落日本海军大将山本五十六的座机，就有“中美合作所”的军统局人员在电讯侦测和密码破译方面的功劳。
2. 提供气象情报。“中美合作所”还建立起了若干为美国海、空军提供气象情报的气象工作站、观测哨等，这些气象情报在美军对太平洋上日占岛屿展开逐岛进攻和轰炸日本本土的军事行动中，都起了重要作用。战后美国海军部的一份报告甚至有这样的评价:中国方面通过“中美合作所”向美国提供的日本占领区军事及气象情报，“成为美国太平洋舰队和在中国沿海的美潜艇攻击敌海军的唯一情报来源”。
3.“ 中美合作所”还在各地陆续开办了一系列训练班，如特种警察训练班、助教人员(协助美军教官开展训练工作)训练班、军事情报训练班、气象情报训练班、战地医务人员训练班、爆破训练班……此外，为在短期内为中国训练一支5至10万人的现代化武装游击部队对日作战，“中美合作所”还陆续在四川重庆、湖南南岳、河南临汝、安徽雄村、绥远陕坝、福建建瓯等地建立了中美特种技术训练班。
中美合作所直接隶属于中美两国最高军事统帅部，总部设在中国重庆西北郊的歌乐山下杨家山。成立时，美国海军部长诺克斯，中华民国外交部部长宋子文、杜诺万少将、萧信如上校和梅乐斯、戴笠先后签名。
军统领导人戴笠、美方的领导是海军情报局米尔顿.梅乐斯上校（后来是海军少将）分任主任。中美合作所主要有情报组、气象组、心理组、军事组和秘密行动组等部门组成。
