ROTH IRA contribution question

I made ROTH IRA contribution to my E*TRADE account on 4/15/2003 without specifying which year. My intention was to contribute to 2002. But E*TRADE assumed the contribution was for 2003 according to IRS regulation.

Now I found this out and wanted to correct this. My income for 2003 does not allow me to make any ROTH IRA contribution for 2003. I called E*TRADE. E*TRADE representative said they did not make any mistake and refused to change their record and reporting to IRS.

What can I do in this situation? I do not want to withdraw the contribution as excessive contribution for 2003.
