Why only 7 months?

Usually J1 has a 3 years periods. If you need do waiver from Chinese government, you can only apply if after you came USA for 1 year. Also you need to wait maybe 1 year if your documents are fine.

Try to continue your work or find another longer job, then consider about the waiver again.
