Need your suggestion

My Apple MacBook is dead after 6 years of use, abused by my kids. When I bought it, I really liked it. But this time I donot want to buy another Apple anymore. I mainly use laptop for word and going to internet, really no need for Apple. Their word is not very user friendly. I like Window 7 I use at work so this time, I just want a simple laptop.

Any suggestion for brand and model? I have been using Apple produce but this time want to try something else. But I do not know much about current market. I would like to get one less than 1000 dollars.
