about notebook's microphone

I have this DELL notebook, set up to use yahoo instant messenger service, when I make PC to PC phone, I can only hear the other party's talking, people on the other end can not hear me.

I have checked up the set-up, and control panel, where 'help' suggested area, the computer does says, the plugged in microphone is not plugged in properly, does that mean I have to buy a microphone? I thought that notebooks should have a built-in microphone.

any one can help sort out this problem, thanks a lot!
