The real problem is toyota's corporate culture. They see everyone else is over-engineering and not being "smart". The engineers at Toyota just don't see a 1 in million chance that the engine needs to be shut off when the brake is applied. They are not going to spend any money on something they think is "unnecessary". Even Nissan is not "smart enough" becuase Nissan/Infinity spent money to install brake override. Now you know why Toyota has a higher profit margin than Nissan.
Being smart is toyota's culture. This is just a tip of the iceburg. You can imagine what else is saved on a Camry for "good reasons".
