The family of a 15-year-old Vietnamese boy fear that he was the youngest victim of the Essex container tragedy. They spoke as his country’s communist government sought to clamp down on human traffickers.

Nguyen Huy Hung travelled to Europe through Russia and Poland, according to his grandfather, after leaving his home in central Ha Tinh province two to three months ago.

“When he was there, his friend said he should go to Europe,” Nguyen Huu Vuong said. “He is very young but when they got him a passport they [the traffickers] changed the date of his birth [to make him seem older].”
