BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A doctor who prosecutors say wrote twice as many pain medication prescriptions as all doctors in Niagara County combined will spend two years in jail.
Amherst resident Dr. Pravin Mehta, 78, wrote 19,000 prescriptions while out of the country. He was the second highest prescriber in New York.
Mehta had written prescriptions for narcotic pain medication like oxycodone, hydrocodone and fentanyl without conducting legitimate medical exams. In 2010, government officials sent four people to Mehta’s office a total of 10 times. They were issued prescriptions without a proper exam at all times but the last one.
Along with that, prosecutors say Mehta had his office manager, someone who was not a trained medical provider, complete prescriptions that Mehta had already signed before the doctor left the country for multiple weeks. This occurred between December 2007 and January 2010. Mehta’s medical staff did not include any licensed medical professionals.
