Great and tricky question

I don't have much experiences with interview and how to pick boss just from interview. But sometiems one can figure sth out by taking into account others' response to your future boss's request. For example, my first interview, several high level people during one-on-one time told me that they would not be available for my presentation. this could be a sign that the HM is not on a critical path or not important. I figured that one out 6 months after joining the force.
Another one is to figure out what are the key competency/projects in the department and try to find out if the boss is on the key competency. This one takes skills and experiences. A simple way is to ask the president or VP or CXO directly to figure out. They usually appreciate a question like that.
