Well, we have to admit that Chinese from south usually pay more attention to personal hygiene than those from north. If you live in northern China and do not have enough water to bath everyday then it's understandable. But if you are in the States already and do not change your habit then what excuse you have?

I am not discriminating either northerners or southerners. Because: if I come from south but my ancestors may come from north. The same is true: If I am from north but my ancestors may be from south.

Comparing 民工 from south China to north Chinese at higher social economical level is not very fair but suggests another thing: southern Chinese are more hard-working on average.
