(1). If you can still get the Chinese medicine and that really controls the seizure, then keep using it. If the Chinese medicine and the anti-seizure meds here cannot control the seizure, then surgery is the only proven choice.
(2) Did the neurosurgen or neurologist diagnose you mesial temporal sclerosis? You must also had EEG and the EEG points to the same side as MRI, right? If that is the case, then mesial temporal lobectomy is very effective. Hopkins is well-known for that surgery to be successful, mostly in child because of Dr.Ben Carson (my blog has his story).
(3) The wada test is a cereberal angiogram test together with neurologist. A catheter/tube will be inserted to each side of the internal carotid artery one at a time through your groin femoral artery. Then pentobarbital (Numbutal) will be injected. This test will help to determine which side of your brain is the dominate side. PET or functional PET is only used for the recent 2-3 years. It also help to decide the functionality of one side of your brain vs. the other side. Not many places can do these tests. They will help to minimize impaire your brain function. They will be done at the Nelson Basement building.
(4) Depending on result from (3) mentioned above, there might be untoward effect on your brain function/memory. The surgery should be safe and I have full confidence of them (I deal with neurovascular disease but I know they are the best).
(5) After surgery, assuming everything goes well, you still need to take seizure meds and then gradual tapper out. This is relatively short comparing to taking the meds for life time.
(6)If you need help while at Hopkins I'll be glad to help (QQH me).
Best of luck to you!
